CBS Newsman Dies from Adult-Onset Asthma

Harold Dow, a longtime newsman, whose career at CBS spanned 40 years, died on Saturday, August 21, 2010 from adult-onset asthma while driving his car.

He was 62 years of age.

Mr. Dow, a few days earlier complained about chest pains and shortness of breath. He checked himself into the Valley Hospital emergency room in Ridgewood, N.J., where he was diagnosed with severe asthmatic symptoms. According to police reports, at the scene of his death, an inhaler was found on the floorboard of Mr. Harold's vehicle.

Dow was a reporter for the "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" as well as for CBS News Sunday Morning. He was most famous for his reporting on CBS 48 Hours.

Adult Onset Asthma

According to WebMD, asthma symptoms that appear in adults over the age of 20 are diagnosed as Adult Onset Asthma. This condition may be the result of environmental irritants such as tobacco smoke, mold, dust, and even perfume. Allergies are other conditions that can trigger asthma conditions.

Asthma symptoms include tightness of chest, difficulty breathing, frequent coughing, and wheezing.

Asthma takes the lives of 11 Americans each day. That's 4000 deaths per year, many which could be avoided with proper treatment and care.
